#What are AEO tools?

AEO tools — also called GEO tools, AI visibility monitors, or LLM brand-mention trackers — are software that measures how often, where, and how favorably a brand appears in the responses of AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. They run user-registered prompts against the models on a scheduled cadence (typically daily), parse the responses for brand mentions and citation positions, and surface the source URLs the models used to compose each answer.

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. The terms are used interchangeably across the category; the discipline is the same.

#How AEO is different from SEO

Search engines rank pages. Answer engines compose responses from cited sources. The optimization surface is different, the measurement instruments are different, and the buying audience often sits inside the marketing org rather than the SEO function. Where SEO measures position, AEO measures share of voice across model responses, citation rate, source-URL footprint, and sentiment.

The category is young. Most products in it shipped after 2024. Practitioner discourse is concentrated on LinkedIn, operator blogs, and a small number of competitive review pieces; Reddit coverage is sparse. The reviews collected here are the structured layer above that discourse.

#Inclusion criteria

A tool is eligible for AEO Tools coverage when it (a) ships scheduled prompt monitoring against at least three major LLM answer engines, (b) parses responses for brand mention and citation position, (c) is generally available rather than waitlisted, and (d) publishes pricing on its public site or to demo-gated prospects within seven business days of inquiry.

Tools that meet these criteria but appear elsewhere in gtmcanon (a different volume) are not double-listed. The volume a tool sits in is determined by primary use case, not by feature overlap.

When Volume I reaches 10 to 15 reviews, the volume freezes and Volume II opens in an adjacent GTM category — likely Sales Engagement or Data Enrichment, decided by where operator demand routes. The methodology applied to Volume II will be a versioned increment of /methodology.
